Podfic Cons!

Podfic as a fan art is still relatively small, even if it's growing quickly. There are positive steps that can be taken to help podfic as a fan art grow. To learn how check out pod_aware on LJ or DW.

Today is the last day of pod_aware and the theme is encouraging podfic. Know what I think would be awesome for encouraging podfic? PODFIC CONS!!!

Back in August, the amazing general_jinjur posted a poll about a European podfic con (if you're interested in going to European con and haven't already done so, you should go fill out general_jinjur's poll and let her know!) but now I'd like to talk about a North American con. First, a poll:

Poll #1794751 North American Podfic Con

Would you attend a podfic con in Toronto, Ont. Canada around May 2012?

I'd try.
Maybe next year?

The vision I have of the con right now is a smaller affair. I'm imagining 3 rooms, one for panels, one for hanging out and one for group podfic recordings (think how much easier it would be to collaborate with everyone in the same room! When you can have a full cast!) and other fun stuff like that.

I'm thinking about doing it in May since university students should be out of school at that time but it's before the summer rush of vacations happen (also, last I heard the Euro con is aiming for the end of summer and I don't want to overlap so people can go to both if they want to/can).

So what do people think? What would you like to see at a podfic con? What kinds of events, panels, parties? Would you be willing to volunteer to help out (tentatively, I'm not going to hold anyone to this if they say yes)?

Would you be interested in getting more information if I move forward with this?

(Also posted on DW)

ETA #1: I've gotten a couple comments so far that May isn't that great of a month for people. Keeping in mind that there's no one time that'll work work for everyone, feel free to suggest when a better time for you would be.

In the group podfic recording room, it would be cool to have a bunch of stories with blanket permission printed out ahead of time. And highlighters. At least, when I have group recorded stories as podfic, we often go through and divide up the parts and highlight, and then we perform. Or else there could be a projector hooked up to a computer so that the words would be up on a big screen, and they could be colored/highlighted in whatever way the readers wanted in preparation for the story.

Also, it could be like a karaoke thing, with signups? And then people could sit in the audience and watch the people onstage perform while they were waiting for their turn. There could be a couple large events with like 10 or 20 people all performing at once, but that way people could also work in smaller groups, and it would be a cool communal experience. Not sure how one would deal with noises of the door opening and closing. I guess there could be a sign outside the door when a recording was in session, and the door could open for a minute or two between recordings while the next group was setting up?

Hmmm, I wouldn't want to assume what kinds of stories people would want to read, but maybe it'd be a good idea to have a computer and printer (and highlighters) available? Or the projector like you mentioned.

I was imagining that it'd be something people would sign up for but I'm not sure how I feel about the idea of there being an audience in the room. I know that in a group setting it's easy for podficcers to get flustered and screw up their reading and, yeah, the background noise would be hard to control.

Well, maybe people could decide if they wanted to allow an audience or not. I know I'd really enjoy watching some people perform, and I wouldn't mind if people wanted to watch me. But you're also right, I'm sure, that it would be really unfun for some people.

It would also be nice to have organized stuff that people could sign up for last-minute, or to let people meet and then decide to podfic together right away, so to have some stuff available for them to do more spontaneously.

(For time that work really well for me, the last weekend of June/first weekend of August would be perfect. Or Memorial Day weekend, if it's in May, might work, as long as nothing significant happened on Friday...)

Yes to everything!

I think May is good, though the second half of May is better for me, personally. Your idea about the rooms sounds fine to me. (Group podfic! Yay!)

I'll think about ideas for events, panels, and parties, but mostly I just wanted to throw in my support. I'm definitely interested in getting more info.

I'd love to volunteer, but I may not be able to commit much time. Keep me in mind, and we'll see?

Cool! I think it would be the second half of May at the least, although some people have been making noises about June being better, so we'll see. :D

Definitely let me know if you come up with ideas (and volunteering can also be things like running a panel, helping stack chairs/clean up right after the con, it doesn't have to be a huge time commitment. :)

Lindsay. I know I've told you this (maybe not in so many words), but.

No matter what I'm doing, no matter what I have going fannishly or IRL, no matter what my bank account looks like: you can put me down as a fucking ORGANIZER for this.

I'm not joking. I just texted my mom (who works for Delta) to look up prices for me to fly to Toronto.

I'M COUNTING ON YOU!!!! AND JO! (because I've never run a con before, well, not really at least :S)

I think this is obviously a great idea, and I will look on from this side of the world and encourage it pretty enthusiastically but... well, there's just no way I could make it. Not unless it was during the summer. France is just too far away from Toronto to travel to outside of holidays. :-( But hey, I hope you all make it and it yields fantastic times for all involved and that I get to hear ALL ABOUT IT afterwards. :-D

Well, I really hope I'll be able to go to the European one, so hopefully we can meet up then! I want to meet all my new European podfic friends!

Out of curiosity, if the con were in June would you possibly be able to make it?
Nov. 13th, 2011 11:57 pm (UTC)
If that European con happens, I will be so thrilled, you have no idea. I've never attended a con before because the ones I want to attend are either always in the US or not during my holidays, and as a teacher, we get no time off outside of holidays so we can't, say, choose to take four days off for a con. So if the European one happens? I am SO THERE. And crossing all my limbs that you can make it. :-)

As for yours, June wouldn't work either, no. Work doesn't stop before the 9th of July, so... :-(

Wow! School goes much later where you live than it does here. I remember finishing school around June 25th as a kid....

I'm pretty sure, at this point, I'd be willing to sell a kidney or something to go to the European one. I think the only thing that would really stop me is if this con were to leave me with personal debt. :-/ Which I know is a risk when you run a con, especially the first year of a con when you're not quite sure about the numbers and how much everything will cost.
Nov. 14th, 2011 12:15 am (UTC)
Well, we get more smaller holidays during the year, I think? Like, this year, school started on the 29th of august, but then we got a week and a half off between the 22d of october and the 3rd of november when school started again. Then we're getting two weeks off between the 17th of December and January 2nd. Another two weeks off between february 11 and february 27, then again between april 7th and april 23rd. Though as far as I know, our school days are longer, too?

But back to the cons. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to organize a con, yeah. I think you're very courageous and amazing for doing this. and if you wanted to come to the french one, I'm sure we could find a way to put you up for free. ;-) You'd still have traveling expenses, but that might help?
Nov. 14th, 2011 12:47 am (UTC)
Oh man, I would love to go to ALL THE CONS but there's no way I could make it to this one. Travel + money + May AND June (and possibly ALL THE OTHER MONTHS UNTIL I FINISH MY PHD) are just really bad /o\
Nov. 14th, 2011 03:19 am (UTC)
Oh, wow! What a great idea! I love your enthusiasm. I would love to make it but I don't think I'd be able to - money and family obligations are conspiring against it. But I'll definitely be WISHING I was there. :-)
Nov. 14th, 2011 03:50 am (UTC)
I would LOVE to go to a podfic con but unfortunately me going to Canada from the Southeast of the USA isn't plausible for me, especially in May.
Nov. 14th, 2011 01:23 pm (UTC)
I'm midway between "I'd try" and "Maybe next year", but rounded up to "I'd try". Love the idea, and Toronto is do-able for me... the money/vacation-time just might not be there in 2012.
Nov. 14th, 2011 02:47 pm (UTC)
A con is a fantastic idea but traveling outside the US during tourist season would make it prohibitively expensive for me, alas. If it were in the US during off-peak season, I would try to make it. Perhaps next time! This would be the one con I would definitely try to make it to whenever possible.
