Meta: Porny Podfic

Today is my last day of work for the year!!! 4 day long weekend coming up! :D To celebrate, how about some podfic meta/discussions?

During some of the meta discussions earlier this year we kind of skated around, but never actually discussed, the idea of podfic as a sexy hot thing. Podfic is a really intimate thing. You have someone whispering in your ear and, since this is fandom, sometimes those whispers are porny.

Part of the reason why some people are skeeved by podfic is because they find it too intimate to have someone read porn to them. Or they find podfic funny because they just can’t handle someone reading porn to them.

Other people find porn in podfic really hot. During last year’s Amplirecathon [personal profile] mific made an entire rec list of hot podfic.

So, I want to ask people, what is your opinion of porny podfic? Do you enjoy it? Does it bother you? Do you not care? Which podfics do you find sexy? Is there anyone in particular you find reads it well? If you’ve listened to my podfic, how do you think I handle it?

Or, do you have any funny stories regarding podfic and their sexy bits? I always laugh thinking about the tweet @Hllaa16 made about my podfic, Unstuck: "The time travelers wife kradam podfic just started playing at lunch with my parents and grandma at the two kris' and Adam threesome part O.o"

Hi Oh goody I'm first.
I love porn podfic. But more to the point I adore a great story and I think we are lucky that for the most part the stories that podficcers choose are very good indeed. The best of our authors are the ones chosen.
Because I like to immerse myself in the experience I always listen alone, with earphones usually first thing in the morning. If I listen at night the soothing voice puts me to sleep lol. I hate to be interrupted and I like to hear a story straight through. The porn never embarrasses me and to tell you the truth I never think this is a girl whispering to me, I just think this fine reader is telling me this story really well.
I only read and listen to my 2 fandoms because no matter how good the story if I'm not emotionally connected I lose interest but I know thats not the same for everyone.
Favourite authors (some of whom have moved to other fandoms) are shiningartifact, diane mckay, yourself, klb, Rhea314, also there was one reader who did Pour Some Sugar on Me whose name I cannot remember who SANG Adam's stripper part and totally blew me away. haha

Podfics are, essentially, an elaborate fic rec. Because let me tell you, you have to love a fic to put in the kind of effort it takes to podfic it (and not hate it by the end :P).

The porn never embarrasses me and to tell you the truth I never think this is a girl whispering to me, I just think this fine reader is telling me this story really well.
Porn rarely ever embarrasses me either. There have been one or two occasions where I’ve laughed and feel contact embarrassment but I’m just like that (if the characters are doing something I’d find embarrassing if I were doing it, I get embarrassed on their behalf, I’m weird) and, generally, it’s not a porn thing.

I was actually really shocked when pandarus made this comment about why some people find podfic squicky. Not, because I don’t believe her, what she said makes total sense, it’s just so far outside of my own experience. I’m gay, so the idea of finding another woman’s voice sexy, obviously, isn’t a problem for me. But also, I don’t think of fic (and by extensions, podfic) as porn. 98% of the fanfic I read I don’t even find sexy; that’s not why I read it. I’ve never had problems podficcing porn, for the same reason.

It wasn’t until I was editing Aesthetic Alchemy that I realized that podfic is almost 2 hours of porn (I just loved the idea of crazy Adam and crazy Misha together). Actually, of all the podfics I’ve made the only ones that I’ve actually found sexy, personally, are Girl, You’re Like a Weird Vacation (which doesn’t even have sex in it, just some kissing and then fade to black) and The Bargain (because, and this may be TMI, I have a dubcon kink and it takes Kris a while to realize that Adam is only going to have sex with him if he wants it, not because Kris feels he has to).

I’m funny like that. Generally the things I find sexy aren’t the actual sex scenes. Like, the only podfic I can think of that I really (really) found hot was an SGA podfic that was practically gen (only PG-13). I found it hot because the podficcer had the sexiest voice ever. Like, she could have read the phone book and I would have found it sexy. Gah.

So, I would never think to presume about what people find sexy. Still, the idea of someone out there listening to me read to them and getting turned on is really fun. I'm not sure if it's happening or if I have one of those voices/reading styles people find sexy but still, it's fun to contemplate. :)

I only read and listen to my 2 fandoms
What's your second fandom? AI7? Or do you consider the different seasons the same fandom?

because no matter how good the story if I'm not emotionally connected I lose interest but I know thats not the same for everyone.
*nods*
That's one of the reasons why I love fandom so much. I'm in it for the characters and the connections we create to those characters. There are a lot of stories and genres that I never would have read
if they weren't fanfic. When you already have one connection, you can go a little outside your comfort zone, ya know?

So yeah, if you listen to a podfic from an unknown fandom, it's kind of like original fic (or, original podfic I guess) and it'll have to have something else to grab you or you lose interest.

And hell, not just other fandoms, I find that my favourite podficcers are ones that have similar fic tastes as me as well as good reading skills. Like, there are some podficcers where I can acknowledge that they're amazing podficcers but I don't really listen to their podfics because the fics they read don't grab me. And vice versa, there are some podficcers that maybe aren't the best readers but they read fun fics so I listen to them over and over again.

I'm glad I made your list of favourite podficcers. And it was nodense who podficced Pour Some Sugar on Me (which I should totally listen to this afternoon). :)

It's so interesting to hear what others feel about podficcing. I haven't had a chance to read the link you mentioned yet but I assume the point was a girl speaker is not a turn on. Funny thing is I'm not gay ( why the hell I adore slash is beyond me if I had a therapist I might ask) haha but the only time I heard a male podficcer I hated it because he did not sound like the characters ????? If the reader is good the gender doesn't come into it for me, the characters are sexy not the storyteller.
My two fandoms are Cookleta and Kradam. Both because I became invested in one of the partners - Cook and Adam and call me a romantic but I only like those pairings. No threesomes or other partners. To tell the truth I fell for Kradam because it was less vanilla and I love Adam as sex god lol.
Oh yes and do read Pour Some Sugar. Unfortunately the sound quality is not so good but the reader is awesome. If you like a sexy girl whisperer you will love when she sings towards the end. Really talented.

I haven't had a chance to read the link you mentioned yet but I assume the point was a girl speaker is not a turn on.
The point was: Some people are in fandom for the porn. When you’re straight, having someone of the same sex read you porn is kinda queer. Queue squicky feelings.

Having another woman reading you something that would normally find sexy takes away the sexy, or, it’s confusing to still find it sexy when a woman is turning you on. Which is a little weird to me, because fandom is for females by females. If you're reading fic for the porn, there's already a woman involved if only because one wrote it. But it's easier to ignore the woman behind the curtain when she's not whispering in your ear.

Funny thing is I'm not gay ( why the hell I adore slash is beyond me if I had a therapist I might ask) haha
Umm, it makes far more sense for a straight woman to be into m/m slash than a gay woman :P
It’s kind of like how men like watching lesbians have sex. If one hot person is sexy, than two is even better. And there’s no one of your own gender there (which, if you’re straight, you’re presumable not attracted to) to detract from the hot sexiness.

Beyond the sexiness factor, slash is so much more than that, at least to me. It has a lot to do with how the media often focuses on men more than women, especially in sci fi (where a lot of slash culture has its history).

And slash fandom does have its own culture. One that's hard to find elsewhere. I’m not exclusively a slasher; I’ve been in fandoms where my main pairing was het or femslash. I tend not to last very long there though because, for one thing, they tend to be much smaller fandoms. Two, they have very different sets of aesthetics than slash fandom. I’ve grown so used to slash fandom that it’s harder for me to adapt to the different aesthetics.

Anyway, total non-podfic tangent there :P

the only time I heard a male podficcer I hated it because he did not sound like the characters ?????
That makes sense. I’ve often said that I’m a lot more forgiving of podficcers whose accent is significantly different than my own. Like, if someone with a British accent says a word wrong I don’t let it bother me since I assume it might just be a dialect thing. I’m not as forgiving to podficcers with a "North American" accent because if they speak like I do, I expect them to pronounce things as I would.

Like, there’s this one J2 podfic by an awesome podficcer, in the last minute of the awesome podfic she pronounced a French Canadian family’s name in an anglicized way. And like, it was a from an "article" in an American magazine, logically most of the audience would pronounce the name anglicized. But I live in a bilingual city, people would laugh and/or cringe at the pronunciation and was just wrong to me. Eventually I told the podficcer and she fixed it for me which made me really happy. :)

So, yeah, I’m rambley today but it’s probably the same thing for you and male readers. You don’t expect me to sound like Adam but a guy... that’s close enough to be distractingly wrong.

Both because I became invested in one of the partners - Cook and Adam
Ha, I tend to be more invested in one half of a pairing more than the other too but apparently I’m invested in the opposite half than you.

call me a romantic but I only like those pairings. No threesomes or other partners.
I totally get that. I can start off in a fandom reading multiple pairings but by the end I can’t stray from my main pairing. Like, it seems out of character for them to be in love with someone else, ya know? Right now I’m relistening to Aesthetic Alchemy, which is Adam/Misha Collins. While I like the Adam/Misha parts, when Kris and Adam interact and aren’t in love with each other it feels off to me. :P

Oh yes and do read Pour Some Sugar. Unfortunately the sound quality is not so good but the reader is awesome. If you like a sexy girl whisperer you will love when she sings towards the end. Really talented.
Oh, I’ve listened to it before, I was just thinking of relistening to it. Actually, nodense recorded it for me. :)

I have a lot of thoughts about this! (You are surprised.)

I do find podfic sexy in a certain way. I mean, I think intimate gets at it more, because it is not sexy in a do-me-now way, but in the way that intimate quiet conversations late at night are sexy. My favorite readings, in fact, tend to be the ones that I could describe as intimate. And it's actually funny, because I don't feel that my reading style really hits that place. I like listening back to my own readings, but my own reading style does not match up with what I like best as a listener, which I have always found interesting. I would make my reading more like what I like to listen to if I could, but I can't figure out how, so I just go with what feels natural to me and hope that it matches up well with what someone *else* likes best to listen to.

Anyway, that is a tangent. The point is that I do find the act of podfic-reading inherently sexy, but sexy in a quiet way, not actively and distractingly hot.

The reading of sex scenes, though, I do sometimes find actively hot. But I am a person who, unlike you I think, is very affected by fanfic sex scenes anyway. Like, every podfic sex scene I recorded, I was definitely very into as I was reading it. I like reading sex scenes for that reason, because I feel like all I have to do is let what I'm feeling come through in my voice, and it will make the scene work. Recording a sex scene that I didn't find hot would, I think, feel a lot harder to me.

But that is a tangent again, because we are talking about as a *listener*. As a listener, it partly depends on the reader and whether their performance feels sincere. If they seem like they are just not feeling it, it's fine and not embarrassing, but often not particularly hot either. If it seems like they are faking it or feel uncomfortable reading it, that's when it's embarrassing to listen to. If it seems like they are into it, then it largely depends on MY context: if I am in public, I usually won't let myself get into a mental place of focusing enough that I get super turned on by what I'm listening to. If I am home, I sometimes will. But I wouldn't, er, *do* something about it while listening, because that would feel somehow disrespectful to the podficcer. Which is weird, because I wouldn't mind at all if someone else did the same while listening to *my* podfic.

Readers whose sex scenes I recall finding especially hot: mcollinknight in Drop Dead Gorgeous, ann_ciudad in Some Strange Prophecy (during a threesome scene I listened to a couple days ago), shiningartifact in [Bad username: http://shiningartifact.livejournal.com/18619.html]Hard Candy</a> and A Matter of Logistics, fiercelydreamed in Harmonic Function, and I'm sure there are more, but they are eluding me at the moment.

I enjoy both performing sex scenes in my own podfic and listening to them. It rarely turns me on when I record podfic--I'm thinking more of the acting and the reading then. It does occasionally turns me on to listen to sex scenes in podfic, when it's a fic I find hot and a good reader. I don't find it embarrassing or squicky to listen to at all, though I would find it embarrassing if a non-fannish person heard me listening to it.

Weirdly, I do think it would feel embarrassing to listen to sex scenes in my native language (Swedish). Although that might just be because I'm not used to it.

Interesting question. I was initially embarrassed by hearing the sex scenes read aloud, but now my only worry is someone else hearing them. On the other hand, I don't usually listen to podfic (just) for the sex scenes--podfic is for plot, dialogue, and putting me to sleep at night.

Interesting question. Personally, I couldn't listen to porny podfic, partly for the reasons pandarus described, though I'd describe it as more of an intimacy issue. I have no issue with a woman doing a sexy, intimate reading (seriously, Sophia Bush, read me your grocery list!), but it's weird for me to listen to something so intimate read by a stranger. I have no relationship with Sophia Bush, obviously, but having seen her act I feel like I know her. And without that kind of prior relationship, however superficial, it just feels weird somehow.

Great question, and some interesting responses.

So, out of curiosity, what if the reader were somebody that you knew from around fandom? Like, presumably you know paraka somewhat. So would you feel comfortable listening to one of her porny podfics? Or what if it were somebody you chatted with all the time? What do you think the line would be, or do you think no fandom relationship would ever hit that point for you?

I think the line for me is that I know the reader personally, in that they'd have to be someone on my flist. Just knowing someone from around fandom isn't enough to make me comfortable listening to them read porn, but I've listened to porn read by paraka without issue. I fully acknowledge that I'm unexpectedly prudish about certain things, though, so I'm sure my boundaries are a little off center on this one.

(Love the icon, by the way. :)

I enjoy it but my preferred medium for it is still fic as it usually gives me time to read at my own pace. I do find it funny the sexual politics of it and I love the kind of femslashy way it can be if both are read by women. In some way I do like the more intimate vibe because you feel like you're not alone in loving it which I think is a feature of all podfic really.

Finally commenting to this - it's been frantic with Yuletide and various challenges coming out!
Obviously I like it - I'm the one who made the recs list, so no surprises there. It does depend on how well it's read, and the reader needs to be relaxed about it - NC-17 read in a repressed monotone would just be, well, weird. Or possibly quite funny, not sure. I don't think I've heard any that bothered me so far, though.
I don't tend to listen to it just for the PWP, but sometimes it's a nice bonus or you feel in the mood for a raunchy one. But mostly I listen for the story as a whole, and the baeuty of fanfic is we don't have to kowtow to editors and pull our punches when it comes to the R-rated aspects.
I'm happy recording it, noises and all, although I'd always record for the story first, not just for the porn.

I live far enough away from everyone that there's no risk of me knowing anyone or anyone knowing me in RL, so that's not an issue. It's difficult, though, trying to introduce friends to podfic - mostly so that they have some damn idea of what the hell I do in my spare time as sometimes I think they think I'm a little nutty with the fandom stuff (no-one I know in RL is into fanfic etc.) I did that this Xmas - I usually give my closest friends a "mix" CD, but this year I gave them a "mix" of podfics. Trouble is, most of mine is R or NC-17 so I was scrabbling around trying to locate the best of my gen (recorded by me and others), or the milder "adult" ones with very little porn! (like OHS (Inception) where it's really funny and Eames/Arthur only go at it briefly at the end, and it's all in the name of humor!). I have no idea what they'll make of the CD - be interesting to see *g*. Plus, most of my closer friends are het or lesbian, and the stuff I like these days is almost all slash. No, they definitely think I'm weird, I reckon that's a given! Honestly, I don't really care.

Wow, thanks for the link. Now I'm going to have to listen to a podfic by candel_beck for a reminder of how she sounds. I know I've listened to her stuff in the past but it's been a while...

Also, I'm kind of amused by people's reactions to the secret on her behalf. Like, I'm pretty sure I'd be tickled pink if someone masturbated to my podfics. I'd be surprised and probably a little shocked (I really don't think I'm that sexy of a reader) however once that wore off I'd find it fun and amusing.
