Fanfic and Original Characters

God guys. I know I keep talking about this fic that I'm writing, but it's really taking over my brain. Why is it that all my fic ideas are epic ones? This is why I've never tried writing before, because I just don't think I can write an *epic* as my first fic.

And this epic fic? Just got bigger. I had the main idea for my Sex Bot Fic, but I wasn't really sure how I wanted to end it. I was kind of leaning towards John either dying in battle, or going off to live in exile to have his hot robot sex. Now though, I've decided that since this is Terminator, why not end in war and time travel? John and Cameron are going to go back in time and try to *stop* the second war. Which of course spawned a whole other fic idea for how they go about it (with possible tragic consequences for their love). *headdesk*

This is all a lot of planning and big ideas considering I only have about a page of the thing written. Which brings me to my next question to the writers on my flist: How do you come up with your original characters.

There aren't a ton of characters in the Terminator fandom that have names *and* live. I'm hoping to grab some from the prequel novel I'm reading but I'm not done it yet so I'm not sure if they'll live. :S Also I need "bad guys" and am not sure how to present them.

Bearing in mind that I've been writing - as compared to daydreaming - for less than a year, I do love coming up with original characters.

The easiest way, for me, is to work backward. Look at the holes in the plot that can't be filled with canon characters and work from there. What does the OC need to accomplish? What skills or character traits will be needed? And where is the fic set? Is the OC local to the setting? If so, what local traits can be built into the OC?

For me, at least, the OC tends to form organically from there. I had to come up with a whole scottish island population for one of my Primeval fics, and they all grew out of what the fic needed at that moment, and then I expanded on them to give each of them distinct personalities.

Hope this helps.

Ha, the thing is with Terminator, is that there aren't really all that many canon characters that are still standing. It seems like as soon as you get a name, you're going to die. Also, it's more I have a board of bad guys who are all going to have to be OCs. So I guess I'm doing the work backwards thing. :)

Sometimes they walk on with names, and sometimes it's an idea and I need to flesh it out. Depends on the character.

Hmm, I don't think I really have any walking in with names right now. At the moment I'm just thinking of doing a "Person #1 said this" type thing while I think on this some more.

For me, whether I'm writing a book or fanfic, character creation always happens by accident. I just have to start writing and see what kind of characters show up, then write some more to see how they develop. (And if I ever actually plan a character out before writing, they almost always change drastically once pen hits paper. Yes, even for fanfic.)

So, I guess my advice would be to write first, then figure out the mess later while editing. But I'm a seat-of-the-pants writer at heart, so my advice is probably anything but. XD

That's kind of where I'm at right now. I know I need these characters, and it's not like they're even big characters, so I'm just kind of making them do what I want them to do, and will probably edit them later as needed.
